Mississippi Abortion Access Coalition is a fiscally sponsored strategic convening of organizations in Mississippi working to protect, secure and expand abortion, reproductive health, rights, and justice for all Mississippians through partnership, innovation, and action.

Reporting to and working in collaboration with the Coordinating Committee of the Mississippi Abortion Access Coalition (MAAC), the Director is responsible for leading the implementation of the MAAC strategic plan, coalition operations, and internal and external communications. This is a 12-month contract position based on performance.

SCOPE OF WORK

Implementation of MAAC strategic plan, including management of coalition activities:

  • Support development and implementation of a work plan that identifies and sequences the strategies and tactics needed to bring MAAC’s vision and mission to life

  • Maintain, schedule, and facilitate MAAC meetings, including meetings of the full coalition, action tables, and ad hoc working groups

  • Maintain a consensus framework to facilitate reaching alignment and agreement on coalition plans prior to implementation

  • Meeting development and dissemination of materials to MAAC partners

  • Facilitate timely bi-or-multi-directional information sharing between full coalition, action tables, and ad hoc working groups

Communications

  • Work in collaboration with the MAAC board to inform the development of the communications strategy

  • Act as a spokesperson for the Coalition for local and national media requests as requested by Coalition

Staff/Program Management

  • Manage Communications Manager and/or communications consultant(s)

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and direction to all staff to successfully carry operations

  • Manage consultants identified by the coalition for program or other support

  • Co-create and manage MAAC programs and activities  

Operations

  • Develop internal tools to track MAAC work against MAAC goals, including a coalition work plan and shared calendar

  • Manage MAAC operations, including contracts and grants

  • Create and maintain up-to-date coalition organizational documents, including coalition correspondence and records

  • Support coalition members in implementing collaboratively identified work of the action tables, as well as other agreed-upon partner roles and responsibilities

Infrastructure Building

  • Support drafting of MAAC infrastructure building plans

  • Implementation and maintenance of MAAC infrastructure building plans

  • Research steps necessary for creation of a stand-alone 501c3 entity

Finance and Fund Development

  • Work with MAAC partners to identify additional funding opportunities

  • Assist in writing grant proposals and drafting grant reports

  • Work with fiscal sponsor and Executive Committee to ensure alignment of budgeting, fund management and reporting

  • Work with fiscal sponsor to ensure prompt payment of invoices and reimbursements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A successful candidate will have a strong understanding of and dedication to the reproductive justice framework and accessible abortion care. An ideal candidate will also have the following:

  • Culturally competent, strategic, authentic leadership

    1. Mississippi native preferred, or someone with deep roots in and familiarity of the political, social, and religious landscape of the state

    2. Ability to work through an intersectional lens with an intergenerational and interracial group of individuals across a range of lived experiences, personality types, and geographies

    3. Strategic ability to weigh opportunities against return on investment and willingness to recommend saying no to opportunities when necessary

    4. Leading with grace while handling big personalities, hard work and deep feelings with empathy

  • Non-profit management experience and general business skills

    1. Organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail

    2. Proficiency with Google Suite

    3. Proficiency with Zoom

    4. Experience with meeting design and facilitation

    5. Project management experience, including managing multiple projects simultaneously

  • Self-starter with independent work style

    1. Ability to identify necessary steps to implement work plan with little oversight

    2. Ability to synthesize what is required to meet the needs of the moment

    3. Willingness and ability to work long and/or unusual hours (including evening and weekend work) when necessary

  • A valid driver's license, automobile insurance, and reliable transportation

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERENCES:

  • Management of contracts and grants for a nonprofit organization (minimum 2 years)

  • Coalition experience or similar experience management and participation (minimum 2 years)

  • Community organizing experience or familiarity

  • Communications experience, including being interviewed or preparing others for interviews by the media

  • Issue-based campaign experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Travel, including occasional overnight stays, and potentially more frequent if located outside Jackson

  • Driving for extended periods or long distances

  • Carrying work-related items up to 25 lbs including coalition swag for short distances

COMPENSATION

This position is a full-time independent contractor role, with the expectation of an average of 40 hours per week. The contract is for $80,000, to be billed monthly, in arrears. There will be no additional time or compensation, aside from approved reimbursements, when necessary.

The Director may be located anywhere in Mississippi, with the expectation of regular in-person meetings in Jackson, Mississippi, or another location determined by the Coalition.
